Baseline Forehand and Backhand

There are mainly 4 types of forehand and 3 types of backhand on the baseline.

  • Forehand
    • Step-in Forehand (Short balls)
    • Defensive Forehand (Deep balls)
    • Inside-out
    • Open-stance Forehand
  • Backhand
    • Step-in Backhand (Short balls)
    • Defensive Backhand (Deep balls)
    • Open-stance Backhand

Generally, the keypoints of forehand:

  • Close-stance forehand
    • Footwork
      • A small step on the right foot (dominant foot), then left foot step in
    • Hand
      • Racket has an afterswing
      • Thumb pointing down
      • Right foot (dominant foot) follow up to finish.
  • Backhand
    • Footwork
      • A small step on the keft foot, then right foot follow up to step in
    • Hand
      • Right hand slightly rotate (like twist the throttle of the handlebar of the motorbike)
      • Racket heads down, not up
      • Racket afterswing

Volley

  • Racket tilts right/left (step right/left), then left/right foot step in

Half-volley
